Modulation of central nitric oxide as a therapeutic strategy for schizophrenia

Despite recent advances in antipsychotic drug development, pharmacological management of schizophrenia remains relatively unsatisfactory. There is growing evidence that modulation of central nitric oxide may offer a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of schizophrenia. Therefore, this editorial presents pathophysiology of central nitric oxide relevant to schizophrenia and mechanism of antipsychotic drugs. Novel strategies of modulating nitric oxide as a potential pharmacotherapeutic strategy for schizophrenia are presented.(Bulletin of Clinical Psychopharmacology Volume 20, Issue 2, 2010)
